IIHMR conducting ‘Professional Development Course’ for doctors to deliver excellence in Healthcare Management

Jaipur : Health sector reforms, and the need to address the necessity of healthcare management services across the State of Rajasthan, the  government has taken steps to bring in improvisations in the healthcare management segment through trainings, investment partnerships etc. Contributing the Governemnts’ efforts, in health sector reforms, The Indian Institute of Health Management Research (IIHMR) University, Jaipur, has also contributed to improve managerial competence amongst the district medical officers through their Professional Development Courses (PDC) and other shor-duration training programmes. 

With the moto to develop managerial competency of district and block level medical officers working with the Government of Rajasthan, IIHMR University has begun its,17th Professional Development Course (PDC) in Management, Public Health and Health Sector Reforms on 12th October which will conclude on 20th December, 2015. 

The PDC is supported by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt of India and the Nodal Agency being, National Institute of Health and Family Welfare (NIHFW), New Delhi. 

Dr. SD Gupta, President, IIHMR University said, “As according to the eighth conference of the Central Council of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India held on 28-29 August, 2003 in New Delhi, it was unanimously resolved that the professional development course of medical officers should be made a pre-requisite for promotion to Chief Medical and Health Officer/Civil Surgeon/Hospital Superintendents to equip them to handle their responsibilities better. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, in 2005, identified IIHMR University, Jaipur as collaborating training institute for conducting the Professional Development Course for Rajasthan State.”    

Dr. PR Sodani, Dean Training, IIHMR University said, The IIHMR University, Jaipur is organizing a 10-week duration Professional Development Course, to groom doctors to deliver excellence in healthcare management and to enable them to move into leadership positions in the near future and drive the growth of the health sector. 

Since inception of this course in 2005, we have created a critical mass in the state to take the lead role in health system by training more than 300 doctors under the course, working with state government  as, Deputy CMO, Deputy CMHO (Family Welfare), District RCH Officer, Block CMO, Senior Medical Officer and Medical Officers. In the current batch of PDC, 24 doctors nominated by the state government are undergoing this training.  

The PDCs at IIHMR University are designed with the objective of enlightening its participants about emerging concepts of health sector reforms and gain a better understanding on planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating health programmes in the state. 

The course creates opportiunities for the participants to discuss and deliberate on Health Policy environment in India and Rajasthan, understand the conceptual framework for implementation of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), National Urban Health Mission (NUHM), sector reforms initiatives, and develop managerial skills and competencies to prepare and implement district/city plans for health to achieve desired health outcomes.”

Dr.  P R Sodani, Dean Training at IIHMR University Jaipur said,  “There is a severe scarcity of trained healthcare management professionals in India. The efforts of governments in increasing public health investment to improve access and quality of health care in India in the last few years, requires more healthcare professionals. 

Further, as the health systems is very complex and challenging, the competencies and skills required in management of health care programmes and hospitals deserves specialised training for in-service doctors. This 10-week programme is a step towards creating a critical mass of doctors-trained-in-management in the State of Rajasthan. 

The IIHMR University strives for deliver excellent trainings to create resuly-oriented leaders for the health sector to better plan, implement , monitor, and evaluate healthcare interventions. Doctors who are trained under this course hold managerial positions in health systems. The resource persons under this course comes from Government of India, State Government, Management Institutes, Civil Societies, apart from IIHMR faculty. 

The training pedagogy is based on experimental learnings, participatory approach, case based learnings, and exposure to other states to observe and learn from the on-going health sector reforms. Participants learn from both the health management research of the faculty, as well as from the wide experience of fellow participants.
